Decisions, decisions. So many needs and (relatively speaking) so few dollars to spend. The Phillies have more than $120 million allocated to just 7 players in 2014. That number moves to roughly $140 million after arbitration with guys like Kendrick. Assuming consistency with the last handful of years, that leaves about $30 million to fill out an entire roster.
With the departure or possible departure of Roy Halladay, Carlos Ruiz and the vast majority of the bullpen (if we’re lucky), some money is freed up but Ruben Amaro needs to get crafty. Both Halladay and Ruiz could potentially come back for the right price but with plenty of potentially cheaper options at those positions, it’s not likely unless they decide to take the hometown discount. Assuming they don’t come back, here’s a look at needs and a few possibilities. At least we can all feel reassured that Michael Martinez is back in the fold.
Needs: Cap space, catcher, bullpen, outfielder, major league ready minor leaguers and probably a lot more. We’ll focus on the quick hitters though.
